Music & Movement

Babies bounce, young children coo and clap; and the building of musical skill begins.
At Mother Goose Time we write and produce music that is designed to intentionally integrate across subject areas. The result is an art-infused curriculum that allows children the opportunity to apply and interpret learning through the arts.

Our art-infused curriculum allows children to actively develop cognitive skills while developing social-emotional and motor skills. Both visual art and music allows children to apply learning and is the foundation to new discoveries.

This chart represents a few of the ways MGT children’s music is integrated in art, math, social skills, science and literacy.

Art

Creativity: Visual art projects in our curriculum kits have a corresponding song to inspire children in their creativity. Find ideas on how to connect music and art projects in this book.
Dance: Children can’t help but tap their toes, jump up and dance to our catchy tunes. We offer gross-motor movement ideas in the movement column of this book for each song.

Math

Numbers and Counting: Mother Goose Time songs have children counting and singing numbers.
Patterns: Instrumental songs invite children to mimic and repeat simple rhythmic patterns in listen-repeat song games, where children clap, clink stones, knock wood or bang drums to repeat the pattern.

Social Skills

Social-Emotional: Song lyrics offer solutions to dealing with personal challenges and reinforce concepts of sharing, teamwork, kindness, love and courage. Follow-up discussion ideas are listed in the Discuss This section on each page.
Diversity: Each CD represents a different music genre that introduces children to the world of music, its roots and great diversity. Learn about folk, jazz, country, and the blues to name a few.

Science

Life and Environmental Science: While listening to the lyrics, children recall fun facts about the animals, plants and objects they learn about in the thematic study. Teachers no longer need to search tirelessly for that hard-to-find song on topics such as onions, lemons, sea horses, volcanoes, Saturn, squirrels or beekeepers.

Literacy

Phonemic Awareness: Our lyrics are intentionally written to build phonemic awareness and present many literacy-based extensions.
Vocabulary: Children sing and apply new vocabulary in the fun and interactive songs.
Listening Skills: Our songs tell a story. Children enhance active listening skills as they interpret the story through movement and dance.

  Teaching Suggestions:
  • Use sing-along songs with simple lyrics and repetitive melodies to build fluency in sounds and patterns, and to build confidence in musical participation.
  • Listen to songs that tell a story. The lyrics from these songs reinforce concepts learned throughout the day in science, math, or language. Children participate by active listening and reenacting the storyline through movement.
  • Play rhythm pattern songs where children can clap and tap sticks mimicking a rhythm. This is a call-and-answer type of song.
  • Play instrumental songs and allow children to freely draw or dance and interpret the music.
  • Play songs from diverse music genres that represent a range of instruments, rhythms and vocal styles.
